skin prick test

What looks like a cute tattoo on my child's arm is actually ink. Each letter stands for a food or a substance (pollen, animal). The nurse places a drop of the allergen beside the letter and then pricks it with a tiny pin. She called it 'popping the bubbles'. Liam was fascinated by the procedure. As you can see in the lower right half of his arm, he had some reactions. Below, the larger the mm size, the more severe his reaction:

Dog 3 mm
Cat 4 mm
Wheat 4 mm
Corn 4-5 mm
Peanuts 5 mm

Finally, the specialist confirmed that Liam has Dermatographic skin. Most commonly known as "Skin Writing" disorder. Click on the link to see an example of what happens to this type of skin.

Its nice to finally have some answers. I filled the prescription for the EpiPen last night and bought 3 of them. One for my house, one for his dad's and one to leave in his Diaper Bag which goes with him wherever he goes.

Oh poor bub!! The hardest ones of those are obviously going to be wheat and corn - although from people I know who have allergies, the corn is probably harder to cut out than wheat! (corn syrup, corn starch ... they're in EVERYTHING!)

At least you know he's not allergic to milk now! And that's a good thing!

Are you going to have to get rid of cats/dogs now?

My goodness. So many questions. So many allergies! I think Gwen might have some since she rubs her eyes and nose an awful lot ...

Gotta love those allergy tests. Sounds like he didn't seem to mind the pricks.

Glad you know what's going on now, at least. The unknown is the worst.

Oh your poor little dear! It is nice to know that he got through the test like a little trooper. He is a doll!

Aw poor little guy! How old does your child have to be before you can have them tested for allergies?

kim they said that if he's had corn before with no problems that we could keep giving corn now. makes no sense!! and allergies run in families, wouldn't hurt to get gwen tested ;)

mary he freaked!!! tried to eat his whole hand.

bomshell thanks, he's pretty rock ass :)

lolly i'm not sure, but it took us FOREVER to get in. almost 10 months i think (or longer)

re: giving him corn ... um that does NOT make sense! if he's reacting that strongly with the skin prick test, I (personally) would try cutting it out for a while and see what happens.

Next time we're at the doc's (her 12-month appt) I'll mention it and see what he says. I think he suspects she has some, since I have allergic rhinitis, and Brad had childhood asthma (as did you). Yarg.

Kind of a relief not to have to have pets? I would be relieved :) LOL That's an easy out when he asks for a pet - Nope! You're allergic, sorry! :D

kim my goodness we've been literally giving him corn on the cob for almost a year with no reactions, not even mild hives; it makes no sense, but we're not about to make this more difficult when we don't have to ;) right? like if he suddenly develops problems, of course we'll cut it from his diet, but until that happens, we already have enough restrictions to deal with that actually do cause him problems ... its a hard choice to make and if the specialist had said to "stop feeding him corn" we would have right away but if he thinks its okay to go ahead with then i'm not arguing :) its already really hard as it is... just with wheat and peanuts...

Oh have you? Well that's good to know. I wasn't sure if he often eats corn just as-is. But yeah, if he's had it that much without reaction, then whatev's! (but wth is with the reaction to the skin prick? No. Sense. At all!).

I agree - wheat is enough of a restriction. Thankfully, with the increase of peanut allergies, there are TONNES of products that are nut-free, so that shouldn't be terribly restrictive ... just in homemade and restaurant stuff, right?
